CSAS was developed as an integral part of the national Neighbourhood Policing Strategy. The Government introduced the concept of the wider police family, recognising that there are organisations operating in communities who assist in delivering key neighbourhood policing aims and that tackling local crime issues and where neighbourhood policing could be better delivered by organisations, agencies, communities and the police working in partnership.
An accredited person is a person employed by an organisation (other than a police force) in a CSAS Accredited Persons role, who has been accredited by a Chief Officer of Police under section 41 of the Police Reform Act 2002

Employees seeking accreditation should have undergone CSAS accredited training.
It is the responsibility of employers to ensure that their employees are trained to the standard required by their local Force.
